Idea Description
a pc package might come with a mail in rebate and two years of "free" internet access. a telephony package includes some fixed amount of "free" long distance and some other fixed amount of money per month for the privilege of being a subscriber. an internet access package might include 12 months of ppp access and 5 mb of html publishing privileges. another internet access package might offer more megs of webspace but not commercial-free. an army of volunteers with hand held barcode scanners, hand held computers, (or simply internet access) and perhaps assorted gadgets designed for nonprofit economic espionage could assemble a single huge database table with one row for each item or package of items offered for retail sale. volunteers would record columns for every conceivable value parameter. a few of many examples total package price, number of checks per month included in the price of a package of banking services, number of "non-toll" calls per month in a local home phone service package deal, etc. there would also be provision for boolean values such as whether use of a supermarket loyalty card is required to get a certain package at a certain price. another group of volunteers could use sql or a similar tool to split incoming data into tables based on logical assumptions about data dependencies. the people perpetrating such a website would ideally strive to keep it as low budget and therefore as editorially independent as possible. an even higher priority might be keeping it as openly and publically (and thoroughly!) accessible as possible.
